A National Tragedy

I was devestated when I went online yesterday before leaving work and read this article. I can not even to begin to imagine how the families and friends of miners are feeling. My prayers and thoughts go out to everyone effected by this disaster.

The other day one of the television programs a friend and I watch religiously was cancelled due the a press conference to do with the Pike River Mining Explosion. We sat there for a few minutes complaining until we took a moment and clicked to the fact that 29 families would most probably not be getting there men back. Their fathers, husbands, sons, brothers. The youngest was 17, it was his first day on the job. He was meant to start the following monday but begged to start early. Another had finished his shift two hours earlier but decided to stay and do over time.

It has hit the whole country. And it definatly was a different story when we thought that they might be going home. Today is the beginning of a new era for New Zealand. Where we know that mining accidents are possible. Where we know that cities can be torn up in a matter of minutes by earthquakes. Where we know that anything is possible and that bad stuff can happen to our little country.
